Oxycontin Addiction and Rehab Options
Oxycontin is a fairly strong prescription pain killer which can be used to treat moderate to severe pain. Although you need a prescription lots of people are faking moderate pain so that they can get the pills and sell them on the street. There have been a number of deaths caused by oxycontin, many of which would not of been able to happen if it wasn’t possible to buy oxycontin on the street. Many people are suggesting that Oxycontin should only be prescribed to people in severe pain so the street supply is reduced.
Giving up oxycontin is very difficult, even weaning yourself off it is hard all be it less painful. You should go to your doctor for assistance with this, they may be able to prescribe some more medication to help with the withdrawal symptoms, including:
- Benedryl - This will help to combat the sleepless nights and should be used until the person is no longer addicted to oxycontin
- Immodium AD - This will help to treat the diarrhea that stopping taking Oxy is likely to cause
- Clonodine - Your doctor may also want to prescribe clonodine
You could also consider using herbal teas to calm down your upset stomach, or whatever you normally use.
One really good drug which you should look into if you are addicted to Oxycontin is Suboxone, this is a very good substitute to heroin and oxycontin. Suboxone is also available under the following brand names:
- Bupe
- Buprenex
- Buprenorphine
- Subutex
Even if you have used huge amounts of oxycontin it is possible to replace it with suboxone and not experience any of the horrible withdrawal symptoms. This drug has been approved to treat people rehab centers with an opiate addiction. This drug is still fairly new, but is much cheaper than the alternatives. The only other choices are really:
- Rehab - Which is very expensive and sometimes impractical
- Rapid Detox - Cravings still cause problems and very expensive
- Cold Turkey - Dangerous option and most people will end up giving up.
- Methadone - Impractical as the patient had to go to the clinic everyday
Suboxone only costs up to $90 for a weeks supply of the pills, which is very cheap compared to the other options. There are no withdrawal symptoms and it kills all of the cravings. This drug also acts as an antidepressant, and you can administer your dose by yourself without having to go to the clinic. Suboxone is also a very safe drug as it’s difficult to overdose when taking it. The only thing you need to be careful about it to not take any drugs 12 hours before you have the medication, this means that you will experience the early signs of withdrawal. However the doctor will be able to give you a dose in his office which will kill the symptoms within 10 minutes. Some people are skeptical about giving up one pill for another, however that’s not what you are doing. You will be taking a supervised dose of suboxone everyday, so it is very safe.
